The debut release of New York anarchist duo, Old Cloud, Cosmos in the Mountain is the first of a two part cassette series entitled, The Thanos Tapes.

Cosmos in the Mountain was recorded in Leith's Harlem apartment over a period of two days on a Tascam 4 Track. During this time, Leith was heavily influenced by both the works of Philip K. Dick and Carlos Castaneda. Reading these works in conjunction with the Marvel Universe (specifically the Evolutionary War and Arc Three of the Silver Surfer), Leith and Orbaneja "look'd up in perfect silence at the stars" while contemplating the possible outcomes of the use of peyotl in the vast desert landscapes of Mars.

Leith has stated, "...the cassette is, to [us], mostly political. It was the only way we could avoid all those shadows and puppets in the [government]--to keep them from knowing who we are and what we do. I mean, I was afraid--and Matt is still afraid--about releasing this thing on any other format [than cassette], but I guess we had to, for whatever reason."
